Increasingly, these include reducing hospital visits through outpatient and home-care solutions. InMedica analyses the impact of this trend on the infusion pump market in the new report “The World Market for Infusion Pumps and Accessories – 2011 Edition”. InMedica forecasts that the ambulatory infusion pump segment will increase the fastest; from 19.1 million units shipped worldwide in 2010, to 35.3 million units in 2015. “Globally, hospitals are seeking to optimise the cost-effectiveness of treatments, to reduce healthcare spending. In addition, in many developed countries, such as North America and Western Europe, treatments are being moved into an out-patient environment, to further lower costs. Consequently, the market for ambulatory infusion pumps in both hospitals & clinics and home-based care is developing,” comments Stacey Ronaghan, market analyst at InMedica. Ambulatory infusion pumps are used to administer a variety of therapies including; analgesics, narcotics, chemotherapy, and antibiotic or anitiviral infusions. These infusion pumps are smaller than typical infusion systems, allowing the patient to remain mobile whilst undergoing treatment. In addition to being used in a hospital, ambulatory pumps also enable infusion therapy to be continued outside an acute care environment.
Within the ambulatory sector, home-use devices are seeing strongest growth in the Americas and EMEA regions. “There is a stronger preference for a situation where an unnecessary patient visit can be altogether avoided. This has led to a growing trend for infusion products that can be used safely at home, or in a long-term managed care environment,” continues Ronaghan. “Moreover, as age-related diseases increase, demand for long-term care is on the rise. These factors are fuelling the market for home-based ambulatory infusion pumps.” Indeed, InMedica projects that demand for home-based ambulatory products in the Americas and EMEA regions will increase from an estimated 5.2 million units in 2010, to 8.1 million units in 2015, a compound annual growth rate of 9.3%. “The observed trend towards out-of-hospital treatment and use of ambulatory infusion pumps, particularly in pain management, will serve to reduce the cost of care from a hospital perspective. In addition, allowing patients to recover in the home is a positive and welcomed change" Miss Ronaghan concluded.
